美國南達科他州出現提前到來的異常暴風雪，當地牧場主和農場主都沒有做好準備，導致7.5萬頭牛死亡。據統計，全州農業損失超過70億美元，但由於聯邦政府關閉，那些受災者得不到來自政府的應有的救助。獸醫擔心，如果死牛沒有得到及時處理，可能導致疫病。
根據環球網報導，暴風雪10月3日到6日襲擊南達科他州西部，三天降雪量超過歷年整個10月的最高水平。
氣象頻道說，全州平均降雪量為30英寸，其中部分地方降雪高達5英尺。南達科他州畜牧協會估計，全州15%到20%的牛已經死於惡劣天氣，有些牧場主稱他們已經損失了一半牲畜。

牧場主還沒有提出救濟申請，那是因為美國國會還沒有通過補貼農產品生產者的新農業法案。即使有了農業法案，政府關閉也意味著沒有人處理他們的申請。州農業局長倫施稱提前到來的暴風雪對生產者是災難，該局正在考慮如何做出反應。
而最緊迫的問題是如何處理死去的牲畜，因為該州規定那些死牲畜必須在36個小時內燒掉、掩埋或者處理掉--那不僅是要保護存活的牲畜，也是為了人類的健康。
南達科他州養牛協會警告說，這次大災影響可能持續幾年，不僅是因為數萬頭牛已經死亡，而且因為明年要產崽的很多母牛也受傷害，很多疾病要一兩個星期之後才會出現症狀。
