北極冰融是近年來最引人注目的氣候變化現象之一。美國科學家在2月18日出版的美國《國家科學院學報》上發表論文稱，自上世紀70年代至今，北極冰層迅速融化，白色冰面隨之變成顏色相對較暗的海水，而這一現象正顯著加劇全球變暖。

根據人民日報報導，美國加州大學聖迭戈分校斯克里普斯海洋學研究所的科研人員利用衛星觀測發現，北極地區在過去30年『變暗』的面積是此前用電腦模型計算結果的2至3倍。

研究顯示，自1979年以來，北極冰層面積持續縮減，每年平均減少3.5萬平方英里（約合9萬平方公里），這幾乎與美國緬因州的面積相近。
